Just Released: V-locity 2.0!

by Colleen Toumayan 20. July 2010 06:12
BURBANK, CA -- 07/20/10 -- Diskeeper Corporation has officially shipped V-locity™ 2.0, a new virtual platform disk optimizer designed to deliver invisible background optimization of all Windows® Guest operating systems running on the VMware ESX and Microsoft Hyper-V platforms. New to V-locity 2.0, is the addition of the breakthrough IntelliWrite™ fragmentation prevention technology originally introduced with Diskeeper 2010. Utilizing IntelliWrite technology, V-locity writes files to the disk to prevent up to 85 percent of fragmentation from occurring before it even happens.

Already a VMware and Microsoft partner for its Diskeeper® performance software, V-locity was made to create a virtual-specific product that not only performs defragmentation functions, but also synchronizes the complex and ongoing activity between host and multiple guest operating systems in a virtualized environment.

As virtualization platforms begin to age, fragmentation of files in Windows host and guest operating systems generates more disk I/O than should be necessary. Fragmentation creates more overhead on the OS and file system. While CPU, Network, and memory resources may allow for greater VM density, the disk subsystem can become a virtualization "high" hurdle.

"Fragmentation clogged disk subsystems can lead to an inability to run more VMs on given hardware infrastructure, and lead to disk performance bottlenecks for VMs that share a common storage subsystem," notes Diskeeper Product Manager, Michael Materie. "V-locity is designed to alleviate the 'virtual' disk bottleneck for VMs and provide a faster and more efficient computing platform for new consolidation and provisioning initiatives, without having to add more hardware."

"First of all, when building out my environment I make sure to have fast hard drives, controllers, etc., in order to make sure not to suffer bottlenecks. In addition, I am very careful about not over-committing resources. However, I was shocked to see, after deploying V-locity, how much performance increased on the servers I had hosting disk-intensive operations. This includes our database server, our Exchange server, and to a certain extent, two terminal servers," stated Bill Philpot Manager of Information Technology at Mesa Industries, Inc.

Diskeeper Corporation's proprietary technology, IntelliWrite writes files in a non-fragmented condition. Copy on write solutions (e.g. as used by Snapshots) take action on changes to data at a block level. Moving data, as is done in a defragmentation job to consolidate file fragments in a logical file system, can trigger copy on write solutions to take extra actions such as using more storage capacity, unnecessarily. Writing a file contiguously eliminates the need to defragment it after it has been created.

InvisiTasking® technology, another Diskeeper Corporation proprietary technology, is specifically engineered to allow "background" applications to operate with zero impact/overhead on a system. With V-locity 2, the InvisiTasking technology has been "enlightened" to operate across a virtual platform. Even as more VMs are added to a host platform or dynamically migrated to new hosts (e.g. vMotion, Live Migration), the enlightened InvisiTasking will continue to dynamically adjust to changing environments, providing V-locity 2.0 users with "Set It and Forget It" ® optimization of their virtual disk platforms.

V-locity also frees up vital storage resources by eliminating virtual disk "bloat." This is the wasted disk space that takes place when virtual disks are set to dynamically grow but don't then shrink when users or applications remove data. V-locity actually compacts the virtual disk, thereby preventing waste and allowing IT Managers to better allocate their virtual storage resources.

V-locity has four unique solution sets:

  • InvisiTasking - coordinates resource usage to ensure defrag is 100% invisible

  • IntelliWrite - prevent fragmentation and offer 100% compatibility in all environments

  • Virtual Disk Intelligence - automatically detects and configures based on virtual disk type

  • Virtual Disk Compaction - shrinks/compacts virtual disks that are set to grow-as-needed

V-locity consists of three components:

  • V-locity Host installed in the VMware ESX Host or Windows Server 2008/R2 operating system running Hyper-V.

  • V-locity Guest installed in all Windows virtual machines.

  • For VMware ESX platforms: V-locity includes a small application that allows you to remotely connect from your Windows desktop to the V-locity Host component on an ESX system.

Note: On Windows platforms, each component will optimize its respective OS; performing defragmentation of files and consolidation of free space. This minimizes unnecessary I/O passed from the OS to the disk subsystem and aligns data on the drives for optimal access.

Defragged Files = Greater DR success

by Colleen Toumayan 14. July 2010 06:15

Here's a cool succes about something many IT pro's wouldn't normally associate with defrag:

When we began to invest in Diskeeper we had 8 servers and over 100+ clients that ran for years and would run for many more years. Every 11 weeks we start a new quarter and cycled on average 400 users across all of them each quarter. So you can image the amount of data our students move across these machines. Not to mention the amount of data that is moved across our servers with 600+ users.

Diskeeper drastically improved our disk performance and kept it constant with the automatic defragmentation during idle time. Diskeeper not only helped with maintaining the disk performance, but also made it possible for quick disaster recovery.

We had an old file server that crashed and file backups were being neglected, so we had to run file recovery on the RAID 5 array. Without Diskeeper automatically defragging the drive and keeping all the pieces of the files together, we would have lost 50% of the data; instead we were able to recover 95% of the 300 Gb of information.

The Makers of Diskeeper Announce First Ever Intelligent Disk I/O Optimizer for SANs

by Colleen Toumayan 26. May 2010 11:26
Diskeeper Corporation today announced the forthcoming release of the first disk I/O optimization solution for SAN-attached systems. This new product is the culmination of requests from enterprise customers, technical engagements with leading Storage Area Network (SAN) vendors, and internal company research projects.

Diskeeper Corporation products V-locity® virtual platform disk optimizer and the company's Diskeeper® performance software already have broad adoption on SAN-attached Windows operating systems.

"SAN administrators look to Diskeeper and V-locity to ensure that Windows clients are operating at peak disk I/O efficiency," notes Diskeeper Product Manager Michael Materie. "By eliminating logical fragmentation, via proactive prevention and intelligent defragmentation, SAN-attached Windows systems generate only the absolute minimum of I/O needed, maximizing the effectiveness of their existing storage infrastructure. With these I/O efficiencies, IT is able to save on additional disk drive provisioning costs, as well as the energy and space costs associated with adding more spindles."

Automatically eliminating file fragmentation on Windows® direct attached storage drives, both physical and virtual, is well known as vital to maximize performance, reliability, system longevity and energy savings. However, its use on SAN systems requires special configurations (e.g. Thin Provisioning) that today, require manual IT oversight.

The new SAN-targeted solution will automate many of the manual requirements necessary today, as well as offering new advanced solutions to assist with space reclamation and provisioning in SAN LUNs. While the core SAN optimization solution will be SAN vendor agnostic, Diskeeper Corporation technology alliances with key SAN vendors will offer advanced functionality and performance.

Defrag on HP EVA SANs - 45 million fragments handled

by Colleen Toumayan 12. May 2010 11:49

We have been running Diskeeper 2010 EnterpriseServer for two months on an HP EVA SAN 4000 and 4400, with 4 1TB volumes each.

Diskeeper removed over 45 million fragments in the last two months on a specific volume that had only 15% free space, and IntelliWrite prevented 24,000 fragments. I believe that will be even better as soon as we can extend this volume to two TB.

We see a big improvement on the backup time which came down from 48 hours to 32 now, and it’s still going down.

I believe Diskeeper worth the price and I never had any trouble with software from Diskeeper Corporation, so that alone narrowed the field of choices.

IntelliWrite boosts Lotus Domino Performance - Success Story

by Colleen Toumayan 16. April 2010 05:38

Sure I'd love to give a recommendation for Diskeeper.  We are running 2010 now with Diskeeper Administrator and so far I love the improvements. Many of our Lotus Domino servers were so busy that realtime defrag had trouble keeping up, but with the new IntelliWrite technology preventing most of the fragmentation in the first place, we finally have it under control.

The systems were running well prior to introducing Diskeeper, but we deployed the software during a project where we virtualized over 80% of our production servers.  Because of the shared storage aspect of our virtual platform I knew that fragmentation would become a serious issue if we didn't deal with it from day one.  The  Lotus Domino servers often had trouble keeping up with the fragmentation rate but most other servers did well with Diskeeper Server 2008.

The new Diskeeper 2010 has our fragmentation in check across the boards and I couldn't be happier with it.

Diskeeper supporting CompTIA Educational Foundation

by Colleen Toumayan 15. March 2010 05:01
Diskeeper Corporation doubled its annual donation to the CompTIA Educational Foundation, providing 1,000 copies of its defragmentation software to keep the computers of the military veterans running at top speed while they train for new tech careers.

The Foundation works with its partner organizations, such as the National Christina Foundation, the Wounded Warrior Care Project and South Carolina's Fast Forward, to upgrade the computers used by U.S. military veterans while they train for information technology (IT) certifications. Diskeeper donated nearly $50,000 in software to the Foundation's efforts, which will be matched dollar-for-dollar by CompTIA.

The Foundation's Creating Futures program provides career opportunities to groups of people historically under-represented in the IT industry, such as U.S. military veterans, at-risk youth, women, minorities, dislocated workers, and individuals with disabilities. Training, mentoring, courseware, practice exams, and certification vouchers are provided at no cost to these individuals.

Diskeeper® 2010 Home and Professional performance software prevents fragmentation before it even happens to increase computer speed and reliability. Fragmentation steadily corrupts system performance and generates problems such as slowdowns, freezes and crashes.

"Diskeeper Corporation focuses on helping our customers and partners stay productive. Fragmented hard drives wreak havoc on a computer's operating efficiency, slowing down applications," said Lisa Terrenzi, CEO, Diskeeper Corporation. "Through our partnership with the CompTIA Educational Foundation, America's military veterans can keep their PCs working fast while they train for a tech career."

"In 2009, we provided IT training to 574 military veterans, including 244 disabled veterans -- nearly a five-fold annual increase -- smoothing the way for them to transition from military duty to the private sector. Partnerships with industry leaders such as Diskeeper Corporation allow us to help even more military veterans launch new careers," commented John Venator, president and CEO, CompTIA Education Foundation.

The CompTIA Educational Foundation aims to attract $1 million in fundraising this year. Donations can be in cash, equipment or training seats. All gifts are 100 percent tax-deductible. Individuals and companies can make a donation to the program, and prospective participants can apply for training by visiting the Foundations' website, http://www.CompTIA-EF.org.

Another cool IntelliWrite success

by Colleen Toumayan 4. March 2010 09:42

“We have been a Diskeeper customer for several years now and have not had any complaints. Installation is quick and easy with the admin console tool. The application does not have code bloat with each new version. I believe that the traditional hard drive in our environment has lasted longer since the drive heads have to do less work. I have 5 year+ old PCs with the original hard drives in them.  I have been very impressed with the new Intelliwrite prevention technology. I have seen 90% frag prevention on workstations and have a 380gb MS SQL database with 99% prevention. Our Domain Controllers and Fileservers range from 78% to 88%. This average has been done since we have installed the Diskeeper 2010 version in November of 2009.  Attached [below] is a screenshot of Diskeeper 2010 Server running MS Server 2003 R2 X64 with MS SQL. I hope to replace some aging servers with SSD drives and am looking forward to testing Diskeeper with HyperFast” .

Diskeeper 2010 making SQL (on a SAN) faster

by Colleen Toumayan 4. December 2009 06:21

Here is a great recent success story for Diskeeper 2010:

We are using the new Diskeeper 2010 version.  Ever since we deployed Diskeeper in our location we have seen great improvements with speed on our systems.  I am very pleased with the product you have produced.  We have it deployed on SAN solutions as well. ...we have been running the Diskeeper 2010 version since it came out.

The server running our enterprise is a Dell 6800 16 core 3.2 Ghz Zeon with 16 Gig Ram Server 2008 Enterprise, and SQL s008 Enterprise.  It is our main work horse here.  The data files for SQL are stored on the SAN solution which is an EqualLogic PS4600.  I can tell you that the seek time for data has given us a response now of 369,000 records of information from a query in 4 seconds out of a data file that is roughly 32 gig, and is accessed by 150 + employees every minute.

Increased Performance on Terminal Servers

by Colleen Toumayan 17. September 2009 03:27
We are running Diskeeper on three of our production Terminal Servers. After running the product on these heavily fragmented systems, they seem to have cleared most all of our lag issues related to fragmentation.  I find that Diskeeper’s Automatic Defrag is truly set it and forget it. I do periodically check on it to make sure that it is indeed keeping things cleaned up. I have received no complaints from users after installing Diskeeper as it stays seamlessly out of the way of active work being done on the servers.  Performance has definitely increased as a result of installing Diskeeper on our production Terminal servers.

Diskeeper has prolonged the life of our Small Business Server by 18 months

by Colleen Toumayan 10. September 2009 07:03

From one of our customers:

Diskeeper works 100% of the time.  After I’ve installed it I simply forget about it.   I have it running on two NAS servers and on our Microsoft Small Business Server 2003. Diskeeper has prolonged the life of our Small Business Server by 18 months.  Our hard drives are nearly full, yet Diskeeper has kept them working optimally with low disk space.  We will introduce Virtualization (replacing our SBS2003 box) into our production environment during the fourth quarter using Microsoft’s Hyper-V technology.  I have already tested your V-locity product on a non-production Hyper-V server and will incorporate it into our rollout in October. Keep up the good work!

Cool Customer Quote: Up to 40% System Performance Increase

by Colleen Toumayan 2. September 2009 12:18

Diskeeper has been one of our main implementation tools for any new Windows Server-based product. HBR Solutions has been using Diskeeper for nearly 8 years, and have found it to be a critical part of our system configurations.

Our clients understand the importance of highly efficient data access, and Diskeeper Corporation has always kept their promise on making sure that the drives are always set to peak performance. Whether we run the product under a NAS, SAN or DAS, Diskeeper has proved that it can manage any type of hardware design and configuration including virtual servers.

In the majority of our client's install base, Diskeeper has shown a substantial increase in performance once installed and configured on existing systems. The hardware is a mix of IBM Shark SAN, EMC, Dell (DAS and internal) and HP (internal).

As for the NAS, DAS an SAN results, our analysis pertains to clients who had the hardware in place and were looking at upgrading their hardware. However, once we installed and configured Diskeeper on those systems, we saw performance that went up to nearly 40% better on the same hardware platform.

We are very pleased with Diskeeper and will continue to the use their product on our future endeavors.

A Diskeeper story? Yes, something does come to mind:

by Colleen Toumayan 25. August 2009 10:16

Our Executive Vice President had a 3-year old Dell computer that had probably never been defragmented.  It had only 512MB of RAM and when I worked on it, it was EXTREMELY slow.  To open up MS Word had to take 10-15 seconds or more.   I installed Diskeeper Professional and let him know what I did to speed up his PC.  Much to my surprise he called me back a day later and thanked me for speeding up his PC.  He said it was quicker and the applications he opened were more responsive.   I hung up the phone in amazement. Usually the only time a user calls is when they have a problem, not to tell you how well something is working.  Obviously Diskeeper made quite an impact on him and his PC!

V-locity success story from our neighbor up north (Oregon)

by Colleen Toumayan 19. August 2009 09:11

I am enjoying V-locity. It has made a difference in performance, especially with some of my virtual machines.

One major feature I like is the built-in functionality to compact the VHD files. My hard drive was running low on space, but I knew my virtual machines weren’t using that much and V-locity told me which virtual hard drives to compact. I did that and it freed up a lot of space.

We are running NextGen HER (Electronic Medical Records ) which generates hundreds of files daily, but we don’t have to worry because every night V-locity puts them in their place! The speed of our virtual guests and hosts and increased dramatically as well as our biggest file server that serves 170 users.  I also like how unobtrusive V-locity is… I don’t even notice that it is there really. I am excited to see Diskeeper [Corporation] on the cutting edge!

No more delays in business critical ERP apps

by Colleen Toumayan 12. August 2009 05:47
Great customer success:

“Diskeeper is vital; it helps our business with what we consider preventative maintenance.  We also feel that this software keeps our server and our server apps running smoothly and efficiently as we have 50 users who require simultaneous access to our data for operation of our facilities.  I run Diskeeper on my primary ERP server which is our business critical application.  We saw within the first day, that previous delays in processing data had decreased.  Our current ERP, called Eagle, was installed and implemented about 2.5 years ago and is made by a company called DMS (now owned by AFS).  This server is one of four we run Diskeeper on.  Since we are food warehousing company, we chose an application that was built specifically for our industry.  Also as we are a company that ships and processes orders 24 hours a day, 6 days a week, being able to run at optimal performance is always crucial for us. “

Auto Defrag and SANs

by Colleen Toumayan 6. August 2009 08:20
Another Cool Success Story: “We have had one version or another of Diskeeper installed on our production SAN for many years. That is what we use for our major production systems.   The Automatic defrag option for drives and disk volumes is by far the greatest feature.  The ‘Set It and Forget It’ is the best way to ensure file fragmentation is always minimal. No manual defrags are ever required and performance levels are constantly maintained at their highest levels due to having all our database files in contiguous drive space. The only time we ever end up with major file fragmentation is during our nightly backups (many hundreds of gigabytes) and Auto defrag takes care of that within a few hours.  We have a multi-node cluster using this SAN and no matter which node is owning the cluster resources, Diskeeper takes care of all shared volumes. Other then the initial install, I spend close to zero time with Diskeeper or worrying about fragmentation. I checked one of our nodes today and ran a manual analysis; there were a total of 3 fragments for 1 file out of 90,000+ on the system. That’s what Auto defrag does for us!”

Defrag and RAID: We need this on every server

by Colleen Toumayan 29. July 2009 10:50
Here is a cool success story I thought I'd share:  “The deployment process was exceedingly easy.  Made the purchase, downloaded and installed the software - watched response times drop.  Pretty nice over all. Diskeeper is exceeding my expectations. We had definite performance problems caused by heavy amounts of fragmentation. During the first two hours after installation we saw a significant improvement in access and delivery perceived timings.  This was a big surprise for us. The web application that runs on all of our servers was responding faster, pages popped a little quicker and the time between pages was reduced enough to notice without a stopwatch.   The servers are relatively standard Dell PowerEdge rack servers, running 3-6 drives in a RAID 5 configuration.  Unfortunately I don’t have timing or supporting data for comparison and analysis.   I didn’t really think that we would see a noticeable improvement after adding Diskeeper to the servers; it was more of a preventative maintenance issue for me. But on the databases host servers, we saw query times drop rapidly.   Since changing pages in our application can require dozens (or hundreds) of database calls, a small increase in the database performance results in a significant difference for the application.  Combined with a slightly faster access time for web resource files, it was a very positive change for server performance all around. Diskeeper has been moved from the optional utilities list, to the required utilities list for all of our production server deployment.   We are also recommending Diskeeper for our mid-to-high volume enterprise clients for their own hardware.  When the money-counters notice a difference dramatic enough to say, ‘We need this on every server’, something good has happened!”  Greg Porterfield, Pragmatic SoftwareSolutions Engineer/Architect
